Countering the Narrative

Misinformation and Disinformation create confusion and fuel hate.

It only takes eleven minutes for someone’s mind to be changed on social media. In those eleven minutes, a person’s entire value system can shift.

When the new value system is shared (i.e., going viral), it creates what Damon Centola calls “the contagion complex.” Basically, it’s the game of telephone, only technologically driven. We don’t know, or can’t be sure, that what we are sharing is true. Holocaust inversion (the idea that Jews are now Nazis) is one example of this.

But what if we recognized the humanity in each of us? What if we were able to share our own story with the world (anonymously)? What if those stories helped to break down walls, rather than build them?

Countering the Narrative is an educational research and resource center focused on using narrative storytelling to counter hate, bias, and Holocaust inversion.

The wall features a display of open books arranged in a rectangular shape, some of which include illustrated portraits and drawings. Above the books, there is a decorative sign that reads, "Everyone has a story."
